Guide to UNIDO Industrial Statistics and Demand-Supply Balance Databases
INTRODUCTION
United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) maintains a variety of databases for internal user and external dissemination covering statistics of overall economic growth and detailed data on the business structure. The following statistical databases on major indicators of industrial performance by country are available at the UK Data Service:

INDSTAT4 - Industrial Statistics Database
The UNIDO Industrial Statistics Database at the 4-digit level of ISIC (INDSTAT4) contains highly disaggregated data on the manufacturing sector for the period 1990 onwards. Comparability of data over time and across the countries has been the main priority of developing and updating this database. INDSTAT4 offers a unique possibility of in-depth analysis of the structural transformation of economies over time. The database contains seven principle indicators of industrial statistics. The data are arranged at the 3- and 4-digit level of the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) Revision 3 and 4 pertaining to the manufacturing, which comprises more than 150 manufacturing sectors and sub-sectors.
INDSTAT2 - Industrial Statistics Database
The UNIDO Industrial Statistics Database at the 2-digit level of ISIC (INDSTAT2) contains time series data on the manufacturing sector for the period 1963 onwards. INDSTAT2 is the largest industrial statistics database of its kind. Unlike others presented by different classification standards for different time periods, INDSTAT2 provides data by a single classification standard for more than 40 years, which makes it particularly valuable for long-term structural analysis. The database contains eight principle indicators of industrial statistics, including the index numbers of industrial production, which show the real growth of the volume of production by 2-digit of ISIC Rev. 3. The data are arranged at the 2-digit level of the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) Revision 3 pertaining to the manufacturing sector, which comprises 23 industries.
INDSTAT data are compiled in collaboration with OECD: Data for non-OECD countries are collected by UNIDO, while those for OECD member countries are collected and provided to UNIDO by OECD for inclusion in the database. The data are mostly those reported by national statistical authorities in response to UNIDO country questionnaires or UNIDO/OECD joint country questionnaires. They have been supplemented with data published in national statistical publications as well as UNIDO estimates.
Note: In recent years most countries that report their industrial statistics to UNIDO have made a switchover from International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) Revision 2 to ISIC Revision 3 and many of them also to ISIC Revision 4. These countries now provide their industrial statistics that are based on or related either to ISIC Revision 3 or to ISIC Revision 4. As of 2010, UNIDO has discontinued the production of INDSTAT4-Rev.2, which was a co-product of INDSTAT4-Rev.3 in the past.
IDSB - Industrial Demand-Supply Balance Database
The UNIDO Industrial Demand-Supply Balance Database at the 4-digit level of ISIC (IDSB) contains highly disaggregated data on the manufacturing sector for the period 1990 onwards and includes trade data. The data are derived from output data reported by NSOs, as presented in the INDSTAT4 database, together with UNIDO estimates for ISIC-based international trade data, by utilizing the United Nations Commodity Trade Database (COMTRADE). The database contains data on output and on trade related items, such as imports, export and apparent consumption. The data are arranged at the 4-digit level of the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) Revision 3 and 4 pertaining to the manufacturing sector, which comprises 127 manufacturing categories in Revision 3 and 137 categories in Revision 4.

Access to the UNIDO data via UKDS.Stat is available to all UK Further/Higher Education (FE/HE) users, including undergraduates, postgraduates, researchers and staff at an FE/HE institution in the UK.
