Guide to OECD Structural Analysis
INTRODUCTION
The Organisation for the Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Structural Analysis (STAN) portfolio includes the following datasets each useful at different units of analyses:
- OECD STAN Industry
- STAN Bilateral Trade Database
- ANBERD R&D Expenditure in Industry (ISIC Revision 3)
- STAN Indicators database
The STAN indicators' industry list is based upon ISIC revision 3 and covers 65 sectors where detailed information varies across country, indicator, and coverage. STAN fills the gap between industrial survey data (microdata) and national level aggregate statistics (macrodata). You can use STAN to analyse industrial structure and the evolution of industrial performance (e.g. import penetration, investment per employee, export market shares) within and across countries.
According to the OECD, variable coverage depends upon whether the variable is compiled by National Accounts, the extent of back estimates, and the availability of census/survey data.
Main topics
OECD STAN Industry database
Provides analysts and researchers with a comprehensive tool for analysing industrial performance at a relatively detailed level of activity.
It includes annual measures of output, labour input, investment and international trade which allow users to construct a wide range of indicators to focus on areas such as productivity growth, competitiveness and general structural change.
Through the use of a standard industry list, comparisons can be made across countries. The industry list provides sufficient detail to enable users to highlight high-technology sectors and is compatible with those used in related OECD databases.
STAN is primarily based on member countries' Annual National Accounts by activity tables and uses data from other sources, such as national business surveys/censuses, to estimate any missing detail. In STAN, since many of the data points are estimated, they do not represent official member countries' submissions.
STAN is based on the ISIC Revision 3 classification and covers all activities (including services). To ensure timeliness, STAN is updated on a 'rolling basis' (i.e. new tables are made available as soon as they are ready).
Years covered are 1970 onward. Countries covered are Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States and West Germany.
STAN Bilateral Trade Database for industrial analysis (BTD)
BTD is designed to provide analysts with information on bilateral exports and imports of goods in OECD countries, classified according to 42 economic activities and 61 partner countries and geographical zones.
BTD is derived from the OECD's International Trade by Commodity Statistics (ITCS) database where (values and quantities of) imports and exports are grouped according to the country of origin and the country of destination of the goods.
The data are converted from product classification schemes to an activity classification scheme (based on ISIC Revision 3) using a standard conversion key. BTD has an industry list based on ISIC Revision 3, compatible with other OECD databases such as STAN database for Industrial Analysis, the Analytical Business Enterprise R-D database (ANBERD) and the OECD Input-Output database. BTD data are presented in thousands of US dollars, at current prices.
Years covered are 1988 onwards. Countries covered are Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States.
STAN Indicators database
Highlights vital trends in industrial structure and performance for all OECD countries and various country groups, providing analysts and researchers with a comprehensive tool for analysis. This detailed dataset presents 32 annual indicators addressing five themes:
- international trade
- employment and productivity
- industrial composition
- business enterprise research and development
- investment
It allows users to focus on productivity growth, competitiveness and general structural change, while furnishing sufficient detail to enable users to isolate high-technology sectors and make comparisons across countries.
The indicators have been calculated with data from the OECD STAN database for Industrial Analysis and the Analytical Business Enterprise R and D database (ANBERD). They also complement the 2005 version of the Science, Technology and Industry Scoreboard.
The industrial breakdown presented for the STAN indicators database is based upon the International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC) Revision 3.
Years covered are 1980-2003. Countries covered are Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States; some country groups (such as EU, G7, NAFTA) are also provided.
ANBERD R&D Expenditure in Industry (ISIC Revision 3) table
Presents comprehensive and internationally comparable time-series on industrial R&D expenditures in ISIC Revision 3 for 19 OECD countries, as well as a zone total for the EU. Compatible with those used in other OECD databases, the industry list now covers a number of service and technological sectors of interest. OECD estimates adjust for deficiencies and anomalies in the official data.
Years covered are 1987 onwards. Countries covered are Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States and European Union.
